Hospital accreditation, rethought
Hospitals today pass accreditation much the way we used to pass exams: intense cramming before the session, then silence until the next one. I argue the opposite: accreditation must be a permanent activity, built on risk management, in which the hospital learns continuously from its own incidents instead of ticking binders once per cycle. The paper proposes a maturity framework — the steps by which an institution moves from “compliance” to “learning”. And the literature shows something important: accreditation improves above all processes and safety culture — precisely the foundation on which the patient's wellbeing depends, day after day.
